Toronto hotel and restaurant to be replaced by 54-story condo tower


A beloved boutique hotel known for its quirky room designs and downstairs restaurant is the latest piece of Toronto culture threatened with being replaced by a high-flying condo tower.

New development application reveals plans for a glitzy new condominium development that would require the demolition of The Anndore House Constantine hotel and restaurant at 15 Charles Street East.

The redevelopment plans would also result in the termination of the Ehwa restaurant at 16 Isabella Street, although this part of the site is being used to create a new park south of the proposed tower.

None of the owners involved or businesses on the chopping block have responded to blogTO’s requests for comment yet.

Offered by the owners Silver hotel group and Developments of the Republic, the plan calls for the dismantling of the existing 11-story hotel building, built in the 1950s as the Anndore Hotel & Apartments and more recently operated as the Comfort Inn before being coated in black paint and its current identity in 2018.

In place of the hotel building, the proposal seeks approval to construct a new architect-designed 54-story condo tower IBI Group. Copper-colored finishes and a unique profile with a rounded roofline set this proposal apart from other square towers in the area, promising a remarkable bookend to the skyscraper canyon that has emerged along Charles Street East in recent years. .

From the 48th floor, the upper levels of the tower veer away from Yonge Street, a direct response to the city’s requirements for the facades of the buildings to fit into a 75-degree angular plane extending from the main artery below.

If this tapered shape sounds familiar to you, it’s because it’s the exact same approach used to solve the upper floors of a similar condo tower under construction a few blocks south at 8 Wellesley.

And you can expect many more similar designs to follow in the years to come, as developers and architects are forced to adhere to these restrictive design policies.

To uphold these rules, these policies are designed to help maintain Yonge’s existing character, and similar guidelines helped shape the multi-tiered ‘wedding cake’ skyscrapers of Manhattan from the beginning of the 20th century.

A penthouse unit on the 54th floor suggested in the renderings and architectural drawings would be a three-bedroom unit occupying the entire floor, offering an exclusive buyer a massive suite with its own private elevator entrance and a patio that stands out. in the western renderings of the tower facade.

This is just one of 549 condo units slated to fill the tower, though most are much smaller than the lavish penthouse occupying the Crown. The breakdown of units includes a pair of studios, 390 one-bedroom units, 98 two-bedroom units, and 59 three-bedroom units.

While space might not be enough to replace Constantine’s beloved restaurant, the ground floor would include a small retail element of 146 square meters.
