New Learning Center
SALISBURY – Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore (JA), a non-profit organization headquartered in Salisbury, Maryland, recently unveiled renderings that showcase the design of its new interactive learning center. The Perdue Henson Junior Achievement Center is now in the early phases of construction with delivery scheduled for fall 2023. Located on Oak Ridge Commons, the center will occupy the over 25,000 square foot unit formerly occupied by Kmart at block 300 of Tilghman Road in Salisbury, MD.
Gillis Gilkerson (GGI) and Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF) formed a team responsible for the design and construction of the center. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to serve more than 10,000 Delmarva Peninsula students each year. In partnership with local school systems, the experiential learning center will support Junior Achievement’s mission to improve financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurial skills among youth in our region.
With hands-on learning as the core strategy to provide real-world scenarios to students, this unique adaptive reuse project will transform the vacancy into a “fictitious city” – a city that simulates the daily functions of adult life. This part of the facility will feature a large open space with eighteen interactive display cases that encourage career exploration. Students will also have access to a learning lab with interactive monitors and other technologies used to explore career paths and associated educational requirements.
As you enter from the front of the building, the lobby space will include an exhibit wall acknowledging the facility’s generous donors as well as an exhibit highlighting the history of the Junior Achievement organization. From this entrance, the center’s offices and meeting room will be accessible to JA staff and visitors. Other spaces in the center will be dedicated to outdoor learning and hosting events.
“Designing the center as envisioned by JA has been a truly rewarding experience,” said Payton Bridge, AIA, DBF Architect project manager. “The center was designed in conjunction with the overall goal of enriching education, strengthening connections between students and their local communities, and fostering positive student experiences.
As a whole, Junior Achievement operates nationally, reaching more than 3 million students annually. With a sincere commitment to providing our nation’s youth with the knowledge and skills to create their own success, Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore is opening this center backed by the full support of the Delmarva community.
“It is truly an honor to have been chosen as the construction team for this project. We are excited to play a part in transforming this space, helping it become a community asset for years to come,” said GGI Vice President Tyler Barnes. “Junior Achievement has a lasting impact on our community. The guidance and examples their initiatives provide to our young people are essential throughout the East Coast and beyond.
